It’s been about a week since I asked users about the addition of 128×128 and 256×256 to their icon resources. In some ways, the results have been pretty much as expected. In others, not so much!
Not only are yes-votes more numerous, they are more emphatic. Only an additional ~23% of No-votes were not unique — less even than the Meh-votes (~39%).
Honestly, I’m a little surprised that so many people even bothered with the Meh-option.
The results are pretty clear: people want the larger icons. But fifteen percent do not want larger icons, and that number doesn’t seem trivial.
I will add an option to skip those sizes, and hope the No-voters are more comfortable with a slightly more complicated interface than the Yes-es.
Just found your site via an old edition of ‘Computer Active’. Tried 2 images and each download only produced 1 icon (size), not the 5 different sizes I was expecting. Am I missing something? Sorry if it seems a stupid question.
Hi Chris,
Each icon file produced contains a number of different sizes – but there is only one file. But unless using icon specific software, you will only ever see one of these at a time.
The other sizes are in there though, and when the icon is used your system can pick the most appropriate size to display. For example: a smaller icon is used in the task bar, while a larger version is used on the desktop.
Hope that helps!
